Date

1st July 2024 - 5th July 2024

Location

Singapore

Role

Designer and Project Manager

🥉 3rd Place - International Building Design Competition (IBDC 2024)

📝 Overview:
This project envisions a future educational environment where campuses are reimagined as hybrid learning spaces that emphasize flexibility, personalization, and well-being. The design proposes a mixed-use campus, featuring large green areas for relaxation, meditation rooftops, and tree-top huts, promoting a balance between academic learning and community engagement. The concept explores how architectural design can transform traditional education spaces into multi-functional environments that cater to both students and the larger community.

🎨 Roles:
Designer:
1️⃣ Designed a hybrid school schedule to allow shared usage of the campus by both students and nearby residents on alternate days.
2️⃣ Co-conceptualized the partial transformation of existing classroom blocks into rooftop green spaces, based on the projected reduced usage of traditional classrooms in the future with the lead architecture designer in the team.
3️⃣ Conducted secondary research in AR/VR-assisted learning and home-based learning to support our overall design rationale.
4️⃣ Helped the architectural students with non-drawing tasks, such as calculation of existing floor area of green space, etc.

Project Manager:
1️⃣ Organized team efforts to complete the non-drawing tasks on time, including final report, presentation slides, and demonstration video.

🏫 Main Innovation:
1️⃣ Speculative Architecture Design: Proposed a design motivated by technological advancements like mixed reality and AI, which are rarely the primary drivers in architectural design, to create futuristic and adaptable learning spaces.
2️⃣ Mixed-Use Community Hub: Designed a campus that is not only an educational facility but also a community hub, catering to both learning and the well-being of the local population.
3️⃣ Innovative Architectural Video: Produced an AR-based demonstration video partially filmed on Microsoft HoloLens 2, showcasing the potential of mixed reality technology to reshape education and architecture in the future.

💡 Learning by Doing:
1️⃣ Architectural Design Motivation: Gained insights into how architectural design is motivated by factors like human perception of space, such as the visual clutter of the existing building's enclosed classroom blocks, learning from architectural teammates during the one-day site analysis.
2️⃣ Architectural Video Production: Self-learnt architectural video-making techniques through YouTube tutorials, creating content that included site analysis, program proposals, and design aggregation for the competition pitch in one week.

🥉 Results:
1️⃣ Timely Completion: Successfully submitted the project on time, despite the challenge of having only three architecture students in the five-person team.
2️⃣ Award Recognition: 3rd place in the International Building Design Competition (IBDC 2024), lauded for its innovative vision of combining education and well-being in a forward-thinking campus design.
3️⃣ Judges’ Praise: The project surprised the judges during the final round of live presentation, with one judge remarking, “This does not look like an NUS architectural student’s entry.”
